I started my research with examining the difference between motion graphics and animation because they looked quite similar to me.

- Motion graphics are a type of animation, however they focuse on giving movement to graphic design elements, but tend to have less of a concrete storytelling aspect than other types of animation
- the terms are often used interchangeably and the distinction is not always completely black and white
- examples of motion graphics: the bars of a graph to rise up, a moving logo on a website, etc.
- animating characters to bring a children’s fairy tale to life is a different type of animation
- there is no natural reference to how shapes, typography, and grids move

Inspiration
- before motion graphics - Graphic Design worked only in a flat and un-moving format; moving images were equal to the traditional cartoons
- 1940s it was born through the experimental work of Oskar Fischinger and Norman McLaren
- 1950s designers - Saul Bass, Maurice Binder and Pablo Ferro (made it public)
- dating back to the 1800’s, early animation devices like flip books were created to produce movement through sequential drawings, but animation didn’t really take off until the start of cinematography
- the first credits of starting motion graphics and animation can’t be given to any one person in particular, as there were so many different kinds of animation projects being produced at the same time at the beginnings
- Important designers: Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), Walter Ruttman (1887-1941), Fernand Leger (1881-1955), Saul Bass (1920-1996), John Whitney (1917-1995), Stan Brakhage (1933-2003), Pablo Ferro (1935-), Norman McLaren (1914-1987), Kyle Cooper (1962-)
